Making magic happen behind the scenes: meet Emma, our new back-end developer

If you’re an avid Blastic blog reader, you probably know that we like to introduce our new team members by interviewing them. We recently welcomed Emma, who is adding some serious girlpower to the development team.

As the tradition goes, we asked Emma some serious & fun questions. Let’s go!

Hi Emma, thank you for sitting down with me. How have your first days been so far?

My first few days have been amazing. I’ve been introduced to Blastic, and I’ve been put in a talented team. Right now, I’m focusing on Umbraco, which is new and exciting. I can’t wait to learn!

Why did you choose Blastic?

When I learned about the company culture, I was sold. My instincts were shouting “yes, take this opportunity!”. And so far, they have not been wrong (laughs). From what I’ve seen, done, and heard, this was the right choice for me.

We’re very happy to have you on board! Can you tell us a small fact about yourself?

I love communicating with people (even though I’m more on the introverted side). This is why I love our weekly coffee calls on Wednesday morning. Even though we are still mostly working from home, we can catch up and get to know each other on a personal level.

What are you most excited for?

I can’t wait to learn even more. I’ve always been passionate about computers and developing/coding, and now I’ve been giving the chance to expand all that knowledge even more. On the human side, everyone has been very welcoming, which is what makes work even more fun!

Alright Emma, time to get serious. What does a back-end developer do? Can you enlighten us?

We make magic happen behind the scenes! (laughs). We set-up the logic of a website. You won’t see what we did, but you’ll be able to use it. For example: you want to extract data out of a database automatically? We can write code to make that happen. A front-end developer can visually merge our code with what you’ll see as a user.

Do you see any big trends in future web development?

Hmm, that’s a difficult question. I think Maui might become a big deal within the app development world. It’s the newer and better version of Xamarin, basically replacing it. As for web development, I’d say that artificial intelligence (AI) will be used more and more.

Thank you for those insights. To end on a fun note, I’d like to ask you some rapid-fire questions. You can answer the questions with whatever comes to mind first!

If you could trade lives with anyone for a day, who would it be, and why?

I’d trade with Barbra Streisand for one day. Her life was no walk in the park – they threw a lot of heat her way, and she overcame all of it. Another reason why I’d like to be her for one day is her talent to sing. I love singing but.. I’m not that great at it (laughs).

If you were an influencer, which product would you refuse to promote?

I would not want to work with a company that abuses animals for product testing or development. I absolutely adore animals! At home, we have 6 chickens, that go outside during the day, but come back inside every night. Animals have feelings and pain receptors, just like us. We would not want to be used as guinea pigs for large companies, would we?

If your life was a movie, who would make the soundtrack?

Jon Williams. I love the soundtracks that he composed for the Harry Potter movies, so I wouldn’t mind him writing mine as well.

Last, but certainly not least: if you were a coffee, which one would you be?

I’d be a black coffee, with a cloud of milk. It’s how I drink my coffee, and I feel like it represents me well.

Thank you so much for taking the time to sit down with us, Emma!
